Google recently announced eco-friendly routing leading to more sustainably by using Google Maps Platform!

There are so many campaigns around the world today empowering people to achieve positive changes and impacts addressing environmental and sustainability.

Google Maps Platform recently updated the new routing model to be able to estimate the fuel consumption supporting the eco-friendly routing feature. Google estimated that eco-friendly routing has the potential to prevent over one million tons of carbon emissions per year

Eco-friendly routing is the new Routes API feature which can help reduce your fuel or energy consumption while reducing transportation time and increasing efficiency for drivers.

With the insights provided by the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency, Google are able to calculate the fuel and energy usage and CO2 emissions by the following factors:

  • Average fuel or energy consumption based on regionally representative vehicles per engine type (petrol or gas, diesel, hybrid, or electric)
  • Steepness of hills on your route
  • Stop-and-go traffic patterns
  • Types of roads (such as local roads or highways)

The Routes API will provide the route with the lowest fuel or energy usage which is an energy-efficient route. The API will also provide the comparison data between each route to support the best decision for drivers.
